The committee was very critical of how complicated and confusing the whole process was – and just how little had changed over the last few years. The report makes 45 sensible and practical recommendations – including making things simpler, easier and faster. And giving people more support so they can genuinely explore alternatives. Importantly, the committee also recommended more funding for advocacy so that people have support to make choices for themselves about where they live, who they live with and how they want to live their lives.

This report evaluates the design and development of a prototype Peer Support Platform that aimed to address the information, linkages and capacity (ILC) building needs of people with low vision and blindness. Consistent with the research literature, our user community survey established that people with low vision and blindness face persistent challenges in accessibility of digital information as well as spaces, venues and transport, and overcoming isolation and managing social connections.

Evidence presented to the committee throughout the inquiry indicates that more time is required to fully consider issues associated with the planning process. Further time is also required to consider the impact of recent government initiatives to improve the NDIS—several of which are in their trial stages. Consequently, the committee has decided to present this interim report, which contains 14 recommendations to improve the operation of the planning process and the NDIS more generally. Many of these are proposed as a means of addressing issues with the planning process in the immediate term, while initiatives to improve the planning process are implemented. The committee has also highlighted other areas that it will consider more closely in the coming months.

While most users of these services, and the drivers, have a positive experience, it also demonstrates that there is still more work to be done.

Successive Governments have made meeting the eligibility threshold so burdensome and difficult that many people with disability, who may have been eligible in the past, can no longer access the Disability Support Pension (DSP). The Australian Federation of Disability organisations (AFDO) has commissioned three new studies by various Australian universities to highlight the economic and health impacts of disability, particularly for Indigenous Australians.

It shows that some people with disability face challenges routinely and actively participating in everyday life areas (such as employment) and are more likely to experience poor health, discrimination and violence.

The report, which has been endorsed by over 80 organisations from around the country, includes the findings from a survey of almost 900 Australians with disability and reviews the country’s progress in implementing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD), which focuses on upholding the rights of people with disability.
