Social Security (Tables for the Assessment of Work-related Impairment for Disability Support Pension) Determination 2023

The Determination 2023 sets out the rules decision-makers must use when assessing a person’s work-related impairment for the Disability Support Pension (DSP) under the Social Security Act 1991. A number of changes were made to the DSP assessment that apply to claims for the DSP made on or after 1 April 2023.

The number of tables have been reduced from 22 to 15.  The new tables adopt a functional-based assessment of a person’s ability to work, instead of the previous diagnosis-based assessment.

This instrument replaces the 2011 Determination, but is generally based upon the wording of the 2011 Determination. The changes to the Tables and rules improve the consistency between Tables, clarify policy intent and reflect relevant advances in medical technology, assessments and terminology.

Part 2 (sections 7 to 13) contains the rules for applying the Tables to assess a person’s work‑related impairment for the DSP including specific rules about how to assess impairments of episodic and fluctuating presentation.
