Care Sector to Soak up 24,000 More Workers

The disability and aged-care workforce, already one of the fastest-growing in Australia, will need to expand by a fifth in the next four years as major Labor reforms worth billions power up.

That this will also happen against a backdrop of a rapidly ageing workforce presents unique problems for the sector, according to a new report, A Time for Action, from the Community Services and Health Industry Skills Council, which is responsible for employment development and training. There were an extra 30,800 workers between 2006 and 2011 and 24,000 more will be needed, the report says. “In the stakeholder survey conducted . . . over 90 per cent of respondents reported that the level and intensity of demand in their industry was changing,” it says.
