The Reel Zone is a movie theatre with a difference. The films tell real life stories of people with disabilities who realise that they have an equal right to a life of meaningful education, relationships, employment and community involvement. However, their journeys show that this simple wish is often only achieved at the end of a long bumpy road.

The ARG Project

The Act Resource Guide (ARG) provide lots of information about rights, good service provision, complaints processes and many other relevant topics relating to the Disability Act 2006.

ARG resources involved people with disabilities in their development and have been designed to reflect real life situations, be interactive and are made available in a variety of formats.

In a world obsessed with physical beauty, Robert Hoge is a man embracing ‘ugly’. Hoge was born 41 years ago with a massive tumour in the middle of his face. At first his own mother couldn’t bear to look at him and the family was advised to ‘put him in a home’.

There were national newspaper headlines when a pioneering craniofacial surgeon used the cartilage from baby Robert’s toe to construct a nose.

Hoge grew up to become a journalist and then built a stellar career as a public servant culminating in the job of media advisor to then Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.

But he has rejected further surgery that might make him look more conventional.

Now a husband and a father himself, he’s on a mission to confront us all with some difficult questions and start a new debate about concepts of beauty and ugliness and everything in between…

Twenty years ago, life for millions of Australians got easier. The then Deputy Prime Minister in the Keating government, Brian Howe, introduced an Act that would, for the first time at a national level, make it unlawful for people with disability to be discriminated against. The genesis of change was the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth), which commenced operation on 1 March 1993.

Twenty Years: Twenty Stories marks the Disability Discrimination Act’s twentieth birthday with twenty inspiring stories on film.
