What will disabilityCare Mean for the Disability Advocacy Sector?: Forum Summary

On 20 June, DARU co-convened a forum with Disability Advocacy Victoria (DAV). The theme of the forum was What will Disability Care mean for the disability advocacy sector? In total 38 people registered for the forum.

It was unfortunate that the Disability Care Australia representative was unable to attend on the day due to a car breakdown on the freeway into Melbourne from Geelong. The forum heard from speakers Michael Chromie from the Office for Disability, Steve Doran, Secretary of DAV, and George Taleporos from Youth Disability Advocacy Services, who was a member of the Victorian NDIS Transition Taskforce. The forum was hosted by DAV Chair Jan Ashworth.

This was the first time DARU and DAV have worked together to hold a forum. DARU provided the resources to run the forum and DAV organised the formal proceedings. We acknowledge the work of DAV, and thank those who attended the forum.

The very clear message that came out of the forum was there is definitely a place for advocacy in the new Disability Care environment. People with a disability are more than just the supports we need.
