The mental health system was never broken – it was built this way

The proposed Victorian mental health royal commission will be enormously challenging for our community. Policy and advocacy to date have tended to focus on different parts of the system and it will be fascinating to see whether the royal commission can cut through and fully describe what “good” actually looks like.

This will be no mean feat.

“The system” is hugely complex. Treatment, rehabilitation and support services are provided in primary and specialist settings, by health and community organisations, in homes, offices and hospitals across the state.
