Victorian Disability Advisory Council - Call for nominations - members

The Victorian Disability Advisory Council (the Council) provides advice to the Minister for Community Services, Lisa Neville on government policies. It also provides advice on strategies to increase the participation of people with a disability in our community.
The Minister is calling for nominations for members of the Council.
Nominees must be:
• Victorian residents with a disability or carers
• able to consult effectively with people with a disability
Nominations are encouraged from people with a disability, including:
• young people and women
• people in rural and regional areas
• people from culturally diverse backgrounds and Indigenous communities
• people with a diversity of disabilities including people with an acquired brain injury, people with an intellectual disability and mental health consumers.
Nominations close 4pm on Monday 26 April 2010.
Stepping into... 2010 - Internships for Uni Students with Disability

This program has been developed specifically to give uni students with disability a ‘step into’ the workforce, providing four weeks paid work experience within participating organisations.
It is a competitive program, but the application and interview process takes students’ disabilities into account and assists with things like reasonable adjustments and coaching for interviews.
We’ve had great success in the past with this program, and students have found it very rewarding. The work placements are generally either in the Winter (June/July) or Summer (Dec/Jan) semester breaks.
This year we have opportunities for students studying Law, Marketing, HR, Business, Engineering, Public Policy and Research, IT and Accounting/Finance.
Applications for the program will open at the end of this month (March) and close at the end of April 2010.

ACCAN is seeking to appoint a permanent, full time Senior Policy Officer to join its Policy and Campaigns team.
The purpose of the position is to advocate on behalf of communications consumers and work with industry, government and consumer stakeholders to improve outcomes for communication consumers. Applicants should have relevant tertiary qualifications in social sciences, public policy or law and experience in a policy role.

Advocacy/Media Training - DeVine

The VicHealth media advocacy project, is seeking women with a disability, who are survivors of family violence, to take part in media and public speaking workshops.
This is the second phase of a VicHealth media advocacy project, that started in 2007. They will train, support and work with the women to ensure they stay safe, are not re-traumatised and feel comfortable with the projects that they are involved in.

Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Statewide Network (VCASP) position
Victorian Coalition of ABI Service Providers (VCASP), a representative body for public and private sector service providers who assist people with acquired brain injuries, their families/carers, and others involved in their care are looking for a skilled and experienced policy worker.
This policy role supports an elected volunteer network executive and provides wider support to the VCASP membership and its sub-committees. As a sole worker you will need to be a self-starter. If you are motivated, and interested in a position supporting social justice and community service provision, then this may be the opportunity for you.

The Program’s key objectives include
- Providing information, advice and referral for people with a disability their families and carers, and CALD communities, living in the western metropolitan region.
- Contributing to the development of disability policy by identifying barriers and articulating issues faced by people with a disability from CALD backgrounds and their families, living in the western metropolitan region.
- Working with the Department of Human Services and the providers of disability services in the western metropolitan region to implement government strategies, which aims to address the needs of individuals and families with disability from CALD backgrounds.
- Supporting CALD communities in identifying and developing opportunities for inclusion and participation by all members of their community

Victorian Women with Disabilities Network (VWDN) is seeking a woman historian or writer to be involved in this exciting project to record the stories of women with disabilities and collate archival material, statistics and interviews in order to write a history of the Network since its inception in 1994.
The finished book will celebrate the diverse experiences and positive contribution of women with disabilities to public life in Victoria.
